Animals and their enclosures…

Zoo’s and wildlife parks are one of the most popular attractions across the world.

You can go to mini safaris, birdlands, farm parks, monkey sanctuaries and so many more. But the thing is, animals do not belong in cages and sure as hell do not deserve having people prod and poke at them. I use to be one of those people who heavily invested in the animal entertainment industry, I’m a sucker for a few baby animals. However over the last few years, my knowledge on zoo life has expanded and despite what the so-called experts and scientists say, zoo’s are not okay.

My main issue is that it’s just quite frankly not fair. As mentioned in my blog post about South Africa  i was lucky enough to go on safari. It was incredible. The animals have SO MUCH FREEDOM. Humans rarely get involved unless poachers are around, and because they are not cramped in some little enclosure and have miles and miles to explore, they appear more relaxed. The vehicles themselves are associated as being safe because the animals over time adjust to the fact they have some humans waving at them every few hours. Because of this they are more approachable and actually come over and say hi! It was fab, by far one of the best experiences of my life.

I do understand why zoos are important, such as managing animal species such as those on the brink of extinction. However it is becoming more and more rare that the animals who are being bred because they are nearly extinct are not being put back in the wild. Not only that, but the gene pool between animals of the same species in zoos is tiny, which causes mutations and other issues.

I am a firm believer in helping the animals, they were on the planet first after all, but seriously if you want to save them at least give them good living conditions! It breaks my heart to see an animal such as a lion which would normally walk for miles have a tiny place to live.

I ask you all, next time a trip to the zoo is offered, contemplate something else? It’s not fair and i know i sure as hell wouldnt appreciate being couped up all day.
